Do Not Rape

The project consists of three audiovisual pieces presented as three videos and as a play or performance with three acts, an educational campaign, and a workshop. The works attempt to dismantle the “movies” that aggressors play in their heads to create the fallacy that a sexual assault is a normal sexual act. ‘La Jauría’ deals with gang rape and shows male roles, peer pressure, and the escalation of a harassment situation. ‘El Portal’ is an assault by a stranger who, to justify his actions, acts as if there were something between them, as if it were romance. ‘La Novicia’ shows the control that an adult has over a child, in this case, a nun and a girl. It attempts to put into words the feelings of abused minors.

The goal of “No violarás” is to educate and hold potential aggressors accountable, rather than potential victims. The pieces try to show the conversion of the victim into an object for use (not a person) or a product for consumption. An animal is treated as a product for consumption. The photo for the “No violarás” campaign features a woman wearing a pigskin dress.

The pieces attempt to show the process to help deconstruct it and prevent the “illusion” of what is happening from covering up what is actually happening: the facts. The audiovisual series is offered to institutions and student residences as an educational campaign for rape prevention through artistic material. Lastly, there is a collective work in a workshop format titled: Cuanto cuesta una violación, which transforms the experience of sexual assault into an Excel-style spreadsheet that financially assesses (the only language many people understand) each of the aftereffects of rape.

It is difficult to understand exactly how and why rape is a traumatic experience, even though it is obvious to everyone that it is. This work attempts to dismantle the simplification that justifies sexual abuse and to show its impact on the daily lives of those who suffer from it. Unlike formal materials that educate potential victims on how to avoid rape, this project aims to educate and hold potential aggressors accountable. Furthermore, the pieces try to reveal the formula of rape: sexual repression + machismo. Both involve the inappropriate pursuit of sex. Machismo views the victim as a sexual servant, someone to use and degrade, while repression punishes sexual freedom with rape. Rape is socially unacceptable yet tolerated at the same time.

No Violarás, an Art-Education Campaign for rape prevention, has received a grant for artistic creation from the Madrid City Council of 23,800 Euros on behalf of Fundación MOSIS. The objective has been to create several audiovisual pieces that, by raising awareness about the root of the problem (the need to educate the potential aggressor) and debunking myths (such as the victim participating in and/or precipitating the abuse), provide training in the prevention of assault and sexual abuse. Additionally, the campaign aims to support those who have been victims of sexual assault or abuse. Actions are the responsibility of those who commit them. History of the project: The good reception of my book Violación Nueva York in Spain in 2017, the international attention given to sexual assault and abuse, the growing activism of women, and the increasing number of rapes in Spain led me to create this project. The research began in 2017. The project was consolidated in December 2017 with a grant from the Madrid City Council. Between April and June 2018, a series of audiovisual pieces were created. The assignment of spaces by the City Council: En Crudo at Calle Farmacia 13 in Madrid greatly facilitated rehearsals and the recording of the pieces. A workshop hosted by ABM confecciones was offered. An educational campaign brings the material to educational centers (high schools and universities), reaching several student residences.

El Portal is an assault by a stranger who, to justify his action, acts as if there were something between them, as if it were romance. Part of the “No violarás” project, El Portal aims to expose the profile of the aggressor: displaying his control games and the tricks with which he justifies his actions.

“I am fifteen years old. I go downstairs to take out the trash like every afternoon around seven. I leave the bag in the street bin and open the building door, someone was about to come in behind me…. It is the first time I see a man’s genitalia. I don’t know what he wants, at that age… I don’t know what comes next either. I try to discern if the door to the cleaning room is open or closed… I talk to him to build camaraderie out of fear that something else might happen, and that he might kill me… Getting pregnant is the worst thing that can happen to me….”

La Novicia shows the control that an older person has over a young child, in this case, a nun and a girl (rape is a matter of sex, not just gender). It attempts to process and put into words the feelings experienced by abused children.

“I don’t remember exactly what she does to me. I imagine she touches me. I know the nun-novice takes off my underwear; I remember the image of the white cotton panties down around my shoes.”

La Jauría deals with gang rape and shows male roles, peer pressure, and the escalation of a harassment situation. Part of the “No violarás” project, La Jauría aims to educate potential aggressors rather than providing a safety guide for potential victims, attempting to dismantle the “movies” that perpetrators play in their heads to create the fallacy that sexual assault is a normal sexual act.

Gang rape is a “performance” that exhibits a situation of escalation. The two songs written for the project, “Hombres Perros” and “Opinión pública culpable”—with lyrics by Jana Leo and music by Silvia San Miguel—speak to the rape mindset and its tolerance.

In Brazil, gang rapes have become a trend. They call it “waiting in line,” and there is even music tailored around rape. In Spain, following the “La Manada” ruling, the taboo surrounding rape has been broken. Thousands of people took to the streets with a clear message. Now it is necessary to build a framework that uses content to weave social change. A primary route is creating reference points within the collective imagination, and a secondary one is introducing this content into education so the message takes hold. That is the ultimate purpose of “No violarás.”

“Hands began groping my body, like kneading bread. Fingers twisted my nipples. My clothes were still on; one was pressing against me, and it felt like he was ejaculating between my clamped thighs, with my pants still on. I have to make him believe I feel something special, that he is the only one I really like. Better one than seven.”

Act I-El portal
Act II-La Novicia
Act III-La Jauría

The work No violarás is divided into three pieces that illustrate an example of an assault by a stranger, such as in a building entrance; ongoing sexual abuse by acquaintances, such as at school by a nun; and gang rapes involving a girl going out to party. The pieces attempt to show the process to help deconstruct it and prevent the “illusion” of what is happening from covering up what is actually happening: the facts.

From the aggressor’s perspective, rape is a “performance” or fantasy being carried out. In “Performance,” I (Jana Leo) am interested in the parallel between a criminal act and an artistic act: planning and executing an action in a detached manner. In La Jauría (gang rape) it is said: “You’ve played a movie in your head: you are not playing fair; you are harassing, kidnapping, assaulting, or raping someone.” In El portal, the rapist repeats, “I like to see how much you enjoy it.” The scene makes it impossible to believe that she is enjoying it.

Both pieces make explicit that the victim’s consent is purely technical. Rape always carries an implicit death threat. The victim plays along with the rapist to stay alive. The public opinion that suggests there is “cooperation” in a rape on the part of the person assaulted implies that honor comes first and punishes the victim for not dying. In the same way that a statement signed by an interrogatsee under torture is invalid, stating “I don’t want to” under circumstances of maximum coercion for something to be considered non-consensual is a mere formality. Furthermore, “saying” (as in saying no) is a volitional act, but when one is completely broken down or under threat, they lack the capacity to decide.

Collective creation and action
In the workshop, participants create two pieces that translate the impact of sexual abuse into something tangible. Measuring something, by establishing an external reference for its value, explains it and gives it weight; Invoice of an Abuse assesses the cost of a rape within an Excel spreadsheet. Just as a pack of cigarettes displays the effects on blackened lungs, The Postcard of the Sexually Assaulted Woman shows a bruised uterus.

The invoice for sexual abuse consists of three main areas: use as a sexual object, actions committed against one’s will, and damages to personal integrity. Within each area, there are different subcategories ranging from availability for gratification, the pedophilia premium, to the mechanism of control and dependency, or persistent damage to self-esteem, among many others. The total cost of these items sums up to 1,289,150 euros. Madrid-born artist Jana Leo, 51, calculates the rapes that a friend of hers suffered at the hands of her brother for years, a document that now serves as a key element of the No Violarás project she is currently setting up in Madrid. It is a step forward that builds on the research and creative works the artist has been producing since she herself was raped 17 years ago by a stranger who entered her home at gunpoint.

Through what she defines as workshop-campaigns, the shooting of three short films, and a performance to be held on May 20 at La Neomudéjar in Madrid, the project aims to expose the impact of sexual abuse on the daily lives of those who endure it. “I needed to address everything it means to suffer a rape through art, and when I was in Spain last year, I saw that this was the right moment, that the public was finally open to it,” she explains, sitting in one of the rehearsal rooms at EnCrudo, a municipal facility provided by the Madrid City Council where she runs her rehearsals.

What is “No violarás”?

‘No violaras’ is an educational project, specifically aimed at young people between 15 and 18 years old, created by Jana Leo with the purpose of reinforcing affective-sexual education in adolescents to prevent sexual violence both inside and outside educational institutions. However, there is a distinct nuance: the educational weight—unlike other pedagogical materials—does not fall upon the potential victims.

The goal of “No violarás” is not to lecture female adolescents on how to avoid sexual abuse, assault, or rape, but rather to educate and hold potential aggressors accountable. It seeks to expose the most subtle logics of rape culture and to question the dominant model of masculinity as well as the power dynamics that are generated.

Presentation letter

Why is “No violarás” necessary?

The lack of an inclusive, respectful affective-sexual education and easy access to web content are causing young people to turn primarily to pornography to satisfy their doubts and sexual curiosity.

Porn has unfortunately shifted from being a source of sexual excitement to becoming one of the main educational reference points for adolescents. Pornography is an industry, and as such, its priority is to sell. The internet has made porn more massive and more normalized than ever, even though it continues to perpetuate stark patterns of violence and relationships of dominance with static, chauvinistic, and perverse gender roles.

The construction of the concept of sexuality is one of the foundations upon which inequality and violence against women and girls rest. However, there is a widespread tendency among adolescents to think that porn is sex. That the bodies of women and children exist to provide pleasure. That rape is an erotic fantasy that many women want to see come true.

According to studies, such as the one conducted by the cybersecurity firm BitDefender, the average age at which boys and girls start watching pornography is between 11 and 13 years old. The gangbang (several men having sex with a single woman) is one of the rising searches on the web. In these scenarios, the woman is an object who has nothing to say. This type of porn not only objectifies women but also relies on aggressive narratives and techniques of violence.

Cases of reports for mistreatment, sexual abuse, and assault among minors have increased by up to 25%, according to the latest data from the Attorney General’s Office, with cases even occurring among boys and girls under 14 years old. Furthermore, cases of gang rapes have increased alarmingly: in the months of April, May, and June of 2018 alone, more events were recorded than in the entire 12 months of 2016 and 2017 combined, according to data from the Geoviolenciasexual project.

Meanwhile, sexual education remains excluded from the school curriculum. This educational gap makes it difficult for adolescents to find truthful information to understand their sexuality in a healthy and free manner: without imposed stereotypes, violence, or domination and submission based on gender.

What does “No violarás” contribute?

This project addresses sexual violence in a visual, pedagogical, and clear way. Jana Leo and her team have developed three videos that fictitiously reproduce three common scenarios for victims of assault, abuse, or rape. In all of them, the project dives into the mind of the sexual aggressor and deconstructs their logic to prevent the “illusion” of the perpetrator from overshadowing the facts or distorting the sexual assault.

To make the videos more emotional and direct, they can be accompanied by dramatized readings or performances, thereby incorporating theater as another key educational driver. In addition, the audiovisual pieces will be presented by members of the “No violarás” team, who are deeply aware of the issue of sexual violence. In a society dominated by imagery, the idea of sharing fictionalized assaults with adolescents is a reliable approach to effectively intervene in building healthy sexual and affective relationships, where violence and chauvinistic behaviors have no place.

Biography of Jana Leo

Jana Leo (Madrid, 1965) is an artist and analyst of contemporary culture who has been residing in the United States since 1997. She currently manages projects in New York and Madrid. She holds a PhD in philosophy from the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid and earned a Master’s degree from the School of Architecture at Princeton University. Invited by the prestigious architect Peter Eisenman, she taught at Cooper Union University in New York for seven years.

Her artistic and intellectual work analyzes society, its taboos, and repressions, showing the absurd way in which we live. Through photography, video, or performance, her work connects the public with the intimate. A significant part of her creation focuses on the home and interpersonal relationships as a reflection of contemporary culture. Beginning in 2007, given the massive changes taking place in the city, Leo became primarily interested in consumption linked to tourism, rezoning, and the conversion of cities into theme parks. Another part of her work focuses on the mechanisms of power and both institutional and personal abuse. It is within this context that she has addressed rape since 2000 as a form of not only emotional but also economic exploitation. Since 2015, she has focused on education as a key tool for rape prevention.

In 2009, she wrote the book Rape New York, which was originally written in English and published by the British publishing house Book Works in London. In 2011, her book arrived in the United States courtesy of Feminist Press in New York, and finally, in 2017, the publishing house Libros del Lince published it in Spain under the title Violación Nueva York. Her work reveals the psychology of the aggressor and the cost of rape in the daily life of the victim. She has also published two other books: El viaje sin distancia (CENDEAC, Murcia 2006; reissued in 2014) and I Condo New York (Vitoria 2008).

In 2008, she founded the Fundación Mosis, a non-profit entity that has served as the channel allowing Jana to amplify the size and scope of her projects.

Bio of the “NO VIOLARÁS” team

The “No violarás” team began to be formed by Jana Leo in February 2018.

Actors:
Pablo Vega, is an actor who has spent more than 15 years working on television series including Compañeros, Al salir de clase, Pelotas, etc. Pablo Vega plays the rapist in the building entrance scene. By stepping into the male role of the rapist, he is highly aware of the underlying reality and the necessity for a role reversal (in the performance, Pablo gives voice to the thoughts of the woman after having suffered a rape).

Alexandra Pino, model and young dramatic arts actress in training. Alexandra Pino plays the child, the victim in the piece La Novicia, and is acutely aware of the abuse of power by those who hold it, whether they are men or women.

Paula Medina Irazabar, an actress who has worked in both theater and performance environments. In 2015, she created a performance titled “Violencia de género” at Lajuangallery. In cinema, she appeared in “10000 noches en ninguna parte” directed by Ramón Salazar. The novice nun brings to light the grotesque nature of the female child abuser within the Catholic Church.

Irene Artal Domenech, young actress and singer. She trained as an actress at Cristina Rota and Central de Cine. In theater, her work includes the play Sangre de Eduardo. “Having to restrain yourself in the face of harassment produces a silence and a noise, even when you act,” says Irene after recording Jauría, in which she plays the victim.

Jorge Vazquez Moreno, studies law and economics at Carlos III, co-founder of Philos Sophiano. This is his first stage and video experience as an actor. He participates to raise awareness among men that one cannot act this way toward a woman under any circumstances. In La Jauría, he plays the guy who successfully flirted and brings the “prey” to the rest of his friends.

Carlos de la Cerda, currently finishing his degree in business management in Madrid. He has an interest in music and the arts in general. Carlos maintains that the only way not to be a machista is to make an active effort not to be one. In La Jauría, he plays the one who resists the group inertia of the friends and confronts the potential male rapist in front of the camera.

Alberto Ester, actor. He studies at the Juan Carlos Corazza school and works as a commercial model/actor. In fiction, he is awaiting the release of a TVE series titled Derecho a soñar. Alberto is one of the potential rapists in La Jauría, and his role is the most normal (the most manly) and therefore the most problematic. Well-versed in human nature, he makes explicit how one can come to enjoy something they reject.

Marta Romero Navarro, theater, television, and film actress. In film, she has worked in “Red de libertad” and “Amigos”; on television, in “Grand Nord,” “La que se avecina,” “Hospital central,” “Gran Reserva,” “Homicidios,” “Pelotas,” “Infidels,” “El Cor de la ciutat,” “Lo Cartanya,” and “Niños robados.” In theater, she has performed in “Rigoletto,” “Autoindefinido,” “La Ruina,” and “Mientras tanto.” Marta is the narrator of La Jauría, highly conscious of the use of women as objects in general, as well as in cinema and theater. Her performance strength brings to life an acting delivery that is reduced to reading a text.

Clara Fernández de Loaysa was responsible for the casting of actors. Hired at the office of Ramón Pilaces, representative of Carmen Maura and Ángela Molina among others, she served as a personal assistant to Álex de la Iglesia for a year and currently works as a talent agent for actors.

Technical team:

Óscar Villasante Ochoa, is a camera operator, filmmaker, and editor. His career in film has focused on documentaries. Óscar has been the most important person in this project; he was there looking at the early versions of the script, then through the casting process, rehearsals, filming, and finally editing the material.
